Mahabalipuram Travel

Mahabalipuram, now officially known by its traditional name Mamallapuram, is much known for its exquisite rock cut sculptures that are now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This sleepy fishing village of Tamil Nadu, sitting on the eastern seaboard of India, leaves you spellbound with its spectacular shore temple, brilliant cave carvings, and colossal open-air rock reliefs.??

History

Though there is some evidence of a thriving seaport in ancient times, Mahabalipuram flourished and was brought to limelight in the 7th century AD by the Pallava ruler Narasimhavarman I. Some legends link its name to the demon King Mahabali, others associate it with King Narasimhavarman I, who was also known as Mahamalla or the great wrestler. Its major temples were built during the reign of the Pallavas, when the city emerged as a major cultural center. Though a part of the city is lost under sea, the rest of its fabulous structures bear testimony to its glorious past.
