Hoysaleshwar Temple, Halebid

History

Earlier called Dwarasamudra, this town came into prominence in the 12th century when the Hoysala rulers made it their new capital. It flourished during the reign of the Hoysala kings and was renowned for its spectacular temples. In the 14th century, the town was attacked & plundered by Malik Kafur under the aegis of the Delhi Sultanate and was left in ruins. This ravaged town later came to be known as Halebid, meaning the ‘old abode’.

Hoysaleshwar Temple

Built-in dark-hued soapstone, the Hoysaleshwar Temple derives its name from King Vishnuvardhana Hoysaleswara, who built the temple. Another shrine within the complex is named Shantaleshwara, after Vishnuvardhana’s wife, Queen Shantala. Built on the banks of a large tank, the temple is a grand tribute to Lord Shiva. Its intricately sculpted panels & gateways, exquisite latticework, highly polished pillars, and the colossal monolith of Nandi, make it an architectural masterpiece.

Museum of Archeological Survey of India

Located within the temple premises, this museum is home to sculptures, ruins, and relics dating back to the glory days of the Hoysala Dynasty. It includes an exotic collection of woodcarvings, idols, coins, inscriptions, and stone & metal artifacts.

Chikmagalur

Located at 1930 m, Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka. A part of the famous Bababudangiri Range on the Western Ghats, Mullayanagiri trek is an easy walk where clouds of swirling mists await you at the peak. On a clear day, the summit is a great place to watch the sunrise. 

Ayyanakere Lake
