History

A major port and a center for spice trade for the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and Chinese since ancient ages, Kochi was the first European settlement in India. The Portuguese established their post at Fort Kochi in 1504. This was followed by the Dutch invasion in 1664 and finally the British rule in 1814, till India gained independence in 1947

Mattancherry Palace

Built by the Portuguese and fortified by the Dutch, this palace now showcases the royal attires, artifacts, weapons, and manuscripts of the Cochin royal family.

Jewish Synagogues

The oldest synagogue in the British Commonwealth, Pardesi Synagogue, depicts the heritage of the Sephardic Jews who built it in 1568. 

St. Francis’ Church, Fort Kochi

One of the oldest churches in India, St. Francis’ Church, was built in the 16th century. It was the burial site for the celebrated Portuguese explorer, Vasco De Gama, who died here in 1524. However, his remains were later transferred to Lisbon. 

Chinese Fishing Nets

Huge cantilever nets, locally known as Cheenavala as they are believed to be the legacy of Chinese traders in Kochi, stand picturesquely at the Fort Kochi Beach.

Spice Market

The spice street in the Fort Kochi area, lined with spice warehouses, takes you back in time when Kochi was a major spice port. The heady aroma of black peppers, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, and cloves is sure to make you sneeze.
